FlexoLink: Choosing the Right Solar Extension Cable
Our solar extension cables now have a name: FlexoLink.
FlexoLink connects your portable solar panel to your power station or solar charge controller. It allows you to position the solar panel where it gets the best sun while keeping your vehicle, caravan, trailer or equipment in the shade.
The range is now available with two conductor sizes: 4mm² and 6mm².
Why cable thickness matters
Every cable has some electrical resistance. The longer the cable and the higher the current passing through it, the more voltage is lost along the way.
Temperature matters too. The electrical resistance of copper increases as the conductor gets hotter. In South African conditions, a solar extension cable may spend hours lying outside in high ambient temperatures or direct sun. The combination of distance, current and temperature therefore affects how much power reaches your power station or charge controller.
A thicker conductor has lower resistance and helps reduce these losses.
Our 4mm² FlexoLink remains a practical and economical choice for shorter cable runs.
The new 6mm² FlexoLink has a larger conductor and lower resistance. This helps reduce voltage drop over distance and provides more margin when cables are operating in hot outdoor conditions.
Our recommended everyday cable
For most portable solar setups, we recommend the FlexoLink 6mm² 15m.
Fifteen metres gives you useful freedom around camp. You can keep the vehicle, caravan or trailer in the shade and position the solar panel where it gets better sun.
The 6mm² conductor keeps resistance and voltage drop lower over this distance. That becomes particularly relevant on hot days, when the resistance of the copper conductor increases with temperature.
For South African camping and overlanding conditions, we think 6mm² over 15 metres is the sensible everyday choice.
It is a good match for our portable solar range, including the FlexoSun 165W, FlexoSun 260W, Karoo 230W and FlexoSun 400W HiVolt.

For most customers, the FlexoLink 6mm² 15m is the simplest choice. For higher-voltage panels such as the FlexoSun 400W HiVolt, we recommend 6mm² FlexoLink up to 25m.

Built for portable use
FlexoLink cables use grey Anderson SB50 connectors and are supplied ready to connect to compatible Flexopower equipment.
They are made for repeated use in camping, overlanding and other mobile applications and include a closing strap to keep the cable neatly packed when stored.

Choose 4mm² 10m when you only need a shorter cable and want to keep the cost down.
Choose 6mm² when you want lower voltage drop, greater distance, better performance in hot conditions or are running higher-current solar equipment.
