A few selected highlights in our journey
2006
Flexopower goes live
The first Flexopower product. A pocket-sized flexible solar panel with a built-in lithium battery — charge your phone from the sun, or from stored power when there's no sun. Compatible with Nokia, LG, Motorola, Samsung and SonyEricsson.
2008
Garmin South Africa
Garmin needed a portable solar charging solution for their GPS devices. The SolarPouch was the answer. Bundled and sold through Garmin retail channels across Southern Africa — Flexopower's first presence on a retail shelf.
2009
Flexopower becomes an approved OEM manufacturer for the SANDF
When the South African National Defence Force needed portable solar that could survive the field, a Senior Signaller Colonel recognised the strategic value immediately — and chose Flexopower. Our panels entered active service with Signal Formation and Special Forces. Similar panels types were subsequently selected by private anti-poaching units, as well as the Namibian and Botswana Defence Forces.
2013
Famous Crocodile Pit Video
We needed to show what next level field-tested actually meant. So we drove earthmoving equipment over our panels, fired an AK-47 at them and threw them into a crocodile pit. They kept charging. The video found its audience in the overlanding community and has stayed there ever since.
2015
Victor Matfield of Camping Solar Panels
Getaway Magazine ran a comparative field test of camping solar brands available in South Africa. Flexopower scored highest across the board. The magazine called our panel the "Victor Matfield of camping solar panels". We didn't write that line. They did.
2016
US Air Force Combat Controllers
A collaboration with a US defence company led to Flexopower solar solutions being supplied to the US Air Force Combat Controllers — Tier 2 Special Forces. Deployed in the field by one of the most demanding user groups in the world.
2018
Lithium444, with the University of Johannesburg
In collaboration with the mechanical engineering department of the University of Johannesburg — Flexopower launches its first portable power station, the Lithium444. Designed from the outset as an alternative to fixed dual battery systems.
2023
Kalahari400W Hi-Volt Portable Solar Panel
Flexopower brought the first portable 400W solar panel to the South African market. Within twelve months it had become the second best-selling product in the portable range, driven almost entirely by caravan and off-road trailer owners who needed more generation capacity than anything available before.
2026
Lithium2400
Four generations of portable power station development led here. The Lithium2400 connects directly to a vehicle alternator without additional hardware — just cables and a fuse. It delivers 2,400W AC output, 3,600W continuous boost, 4,800W peak, and 218Ah useable capacity. When the battery reaches end of life, you replace the battery — not the unit. It moves freely between vehicles, trailers, camp and home. That is what a portable dual battery system should do.
2026
FlexoSun
The FlexoSun 165W and 260W bring TOPCon cell technology to the portable solar range — 25.8% efficiency, five-year warranty and strong low-light performance. They replace the Namib150W and Namib240W that carried the range for the previous generation.
